HUMAN RIGHTS FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITY

Migrants and refugees with disability face many challenges when they apply to come to Australia. These can include:

• Getting past the Migration Health Test imposed by the Australian government;
• Waiting ten years for financial support in the form of the Disability Support Pension (DSP); and
• Recieving culture and language appropriate assistance to participate fully in the Australian community.

Under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disability (UN CRPD), people with disability should be free to move between countries and should have the same right to a good quality of life as every other person. The Australian government has ratified the UN CRPD, meaning that it should be held accountable to what it says.

This page will house information about campaigns to improve the rights of migrants and refugees with disability under the UN CRPD.
